Three Personal Essentials of Education:  1) Teaching my students that the Kingdom of God is at hand.  One of my greatest joys and honors is being able to teach students about God.  Most importantly, I strive to show them that He is still the miracle-working God of the Bible.  I remind them that He is alive today and is intimately concerned with the affairs of their lives.  2)  Learning to learn:  Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.  I believe that as a teacher I should teach students how to learn on their own.  Especially in today's internet world, information is available 24/7.  What students need in not more information, but the skills to make that information their own.  3)  Weightlifting for the Brain:  So often students ask me why we have to learn higher mathematics.  "When will we ever use this?" they say.  I explain that studying difficult things is much like weightlifting.  You don't lift weights because you think that you might run into a dumbbell on the street someday and need to lift it.  Rather you lift weights because it strengthens the body and even makes you look better.  So it is with any hard subject, including higher mathematics.  We are strengthening the reasoning powers and even making ouselves more attractive.
